  • 질 성교를 한 번도 하지 않은 여성을 숫처녀라고 한다. 
  • 갓 태어난 대부분의 신생 여아들의 처녀막은 타고 날 때부터 조금 뚫려있는 것이 정상적이다. 
  • 질 성교를 한 번도 경험하지 않은 사춘기 되기 전 여아들의 처녀막이나 사춘기 여아들의 처녀막의 일부 또는 전부가 자연적으로 뚫려있는 것이 정상적이다. 
  • 남아들의 외부 생식기를 검진해서 그 남아가 성교를 한 경험이 있는지 없는지 확실히 알기 어려운 것과 같이 여아들의 외부 생식기의 각 부분과 처녀막을 검진해서 성교를 과거에 했던 경험이 있는지 없는지 확실히 알 수 없다.
  • 외부 생식기를 검진해서 처녀막이 뚫려있고 뚫려있지 않은 검진결과로 질 성교를 과거에 했던 경험이 있는지 없는지 확실히 알 수 없고 처녀막이 뚫려있고 없는 것만으로 숫처녀인지 아닌지 확실히 알 수 없다.

• A woman who has never had vaginal sex is called a virgin.

• It is normal for most newborn girls’ hymens to be slightly perforated at birth.

• It is normal for some or all of the hymen of prepubertal girls or adolescent girls who have never had vaginal intercourse to be open naturally.

• Just as it is difficult to determine whether or not a boy has had sexual intercourse by examining the external genitalia of a boy, examination of each part of the external genitalia and hymen of a girl is not certain to determine whether or not sexual intercourse has been experienced in the past.

• Examination of the external genitalia, with or without a hymen, does not confirm whether or not there has been any previous experience of vaginal intercourse, and it is not possible to know for sure whether the hymen is a virgin or not just from the presence or absence of a hymen.
