Chancroid

Causes, symptoms, signs

Chancroid is one of the sexually transmitted diseases caused by Haemophilus ducreyi infection of the vulva. It is an infectious disease that causes one or several ulcers on the vulva. In the early stages of the disease, one or two red papules appear on the vulva, and pus blisters form on the papules.

The marginal lesion of the ulcer is clearly distinguished from the surrounding normal vulva.

The ulcer is usually covered with ash or yellowish pus.

There may be one or several such ulcers.

Unlike ulcers caused by syphilis, they are a little painful and not hard.

The lymph nodes around the ulcer may be swollen.

The ulcer may heal spontaneously, sometimes scarring the vulva, and the foreskin may not sag backward or forward normally. It usually occurs in prostitutes living in economically poor countries. If children have this disease, it can be assumed that it is caused by child sexual abuse.

The incubation period is 1 to 10 days.

Diagnosis

It is common to diagnose this disease by taking into account the symptoms, signs, and examination findings. It can be diagnosed by culturing H ducreyi bacteria by obtaining a specimen from the affected area of vulvar ulcer or lymphadenitis that has occurred around it, and it can also be diagnosed with a pcr test.

Treatment is with antibiotics such as third-generation cephalosporins, macrolides, quinolones, azithromycin ceftriaxone, and erythromycin ciprofloxacin. Check for sexually transmitted infections such as syphilis, herpes simplex virus infection, chlamydia infection, gonorrhea, and AIDS. Sexual partners should also be treated.
